Meet Priya Patel, Registered Clinical Social Worker and Approved Clinical Supervisor (RCSW-S/MSW, BSW, BSc). Priya has been working as a mental health therapist since 2011 and has extensive experience providing therapy to children, adolescent, adults, families and couples. She is trained in multiple therapy modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused and Brief Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, and Gottman Couples Therapy. Here's more about Priya!

1. Why did you choose social work?

I chose social work because I've always been drawn to the idea of lending a hand when someone needs it most. Growing up, I found myself naturally gravitating towards supporting friends and family through tough times. It just feels right to extend that care and support professionally. Being a social worker allows me to connect with people on a deeper level and to walk alongside them towards building their dreams.. It's not just a job; it's a calling rooted in empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to make the world a little brighter.

2. What is your overarching treatment philosophy?

My overarching treatment philosophy is deeply rooted in the intersection of family systems theory and emotion focused therapy. I believe that our relationships and familial dynamics profoundly shape our emotional experiences and vice versa. Family systems theory teaches us to understand individuals within the context of their family units, recognizing the intricate web of connections and influences that impact our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Emotion-focused therapy complements this perspective by providing a roadmap for navigating the complex terrain of emotions. By exploring and processing emotions in therapy, we can uncover underlying patterns of interaction and attachment. This approach empowers individuals and families to express their feelings authentically, fostering deeper connections and promoting healing.

In my practice, I strive to create a safe and empathetic space where clients feel empowered to explore their emotions and interpersonal dynamics. By collaboratively examining the ways in which family systems and emotional experiences intersect, we can identify areas for growth and cultivate healthier patterns of relating.

3. What are you passionate about outside of work?

Outside of work, my biggest passion revolves around my family, particularly my two amazing daughters. There's nothing quite like the joy of spending quality time with them, whether we're embarking on exciting adventures together or simply enjoying cozy moments at home. Traveling with my whole family is an experience I cherish deeply; exploring new places, trying different cuisines, and creating unforgettable memories together are moments I hold close to my heart.

When we're not jet-setting off to new destinations, you can often find us at home, gathered around the TV, indulging in our favorite movies or binge-watching a captivating series. There's something wonderfully comforting about snuggling up on the couch with loved ones and getting lost in a compelling story.

4. Any there any particular events that have changed your life?

There have been several significant events in my life that have profoundly shaped who I am today. Growing up as a first-generation Canadian, I experienced the unique challenge of navigating cultural differences while trying to find my place in the world. Balancing the values and traditions of my family's heritage with the expectations of Canadian society taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of embracing diversity.

However, it was the experience of significant familial losses that truly changed the trajectory of my life. Losing loved ones forced me to confront the fragility of life and deepened my appreciation for the time I have with those I hold dear. These losses also sparked a profound sense of empathy and a desire to support others through their own grief journeys.

Through these experiences, I've learned the power of resilience, the importance of cultural identity, and the value of cherishing every moment with loved ones. They have shaped my perspective, instilled within me a sense of compassion, and motivated me to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

5. What life lessons can you share that can change other people lives?

Embracing "It is what it is" has taught me to let go of futile attempts to control the uncontrollable. Accepting reality as it is and learning to let go of what we cannot change has been key.

I've also learned that our thoughts can often hinder our success. By challenging limiting beliefs and cultivating awareness, we can break free from self-imposed limitations.

Lastly, I've realized that connections within relationships are paramount. Nurturing meaningful connections brings richness and fulfillment to our lives, sustaining us through life's ups and downs.
